The token sensible person.
Hermione, of all the main characters, has been
the hardest to get on paper for me. I still feel I don't have her right.
2007 - Trying yet anopther redesign, right from the beginning...
It's got a bit of another drawing invading the top, just so you
know that's not really weird hair or something.
of Crime - Drawn as a silly sketch to fill up the sketchbook one
at 16 - Once again flirting with a new design for Hermione, this
time for Half-Blood Prince.
- Trying to reimagine her at the Yule Ball ... not getting very far
Response to Everything - In times of crisis, the most well-rehearsed
reflexes kick in. How many times has Hermione said this in the series?
Little Lads - 'You are my little lads, and I will look
after you!' (a line from Monstrous Regiment). The Slug
Club, with attendees taken from both the Hogwarts Express and Christmas
incarnations of the organization. Another drawing, another Hermione
design, and Blaise looks a bit like the saucier in Ratatouille
but we'll pretend not to notice that ...
Hermione 2004 - Every
time I return to drawing Pottery stuff, I find my skills have improved
and I have to redesign the stock characters for their own good.
RIP, Nimbus 2000 - Ron and Hermione
deliver Harry the bad news and sad remains of his faithful broom.
With Crookshanks - Hermione
turns up in Harry and Ron's dormitory with Crookshanks on Christmas
I'm Just Reading - Hermione
has ratted out Harry's Firebolt to McGonagall, who comes and confiscates
it, much to Harry's chagrin, and Hermione goes beet red behind her upside-down
Grounded - Ron called Professor
McGonagall a lot of names that greatly annoyed Hermione; Hermione assumed
an "all-for-the-best" expression that made Ron even angrier,
and Harry had to endure everyone in class talking loudly and happily
about what they were going to do first, once they got into Hogsmeade.
Fuming - Hermione really, really,
really, really doesn't like Divination. This is immediately preceding
her abandonment of the classroom, the class, and that loopy Professor
The Bloody Sheet - Ron confronts
Hermione about the evidence of Crookshanks's malfeasance
Surprise Hug - Hermione ambushes Ron with
a hug .. I think this is after he offers to help with Buckbeak's case
but I'm not quite sure of the context.
Harry Restrained - Harry reacts
to seeing Sirius – boy, it's a good thing Ron and Hermione are there,
otherwise Harry would be going totally berserk!
"We attacked a teacher..."
- For some reason I always pictured Hermione doing a sort of mincing
tiptoe potty-dance when she said this, though I couldn't figure out
a way of effectively communicating this in the still drawing so she's
just sort of lamely standing there.
Quiet, Please - Hermione shushes
Harry so that they can listen to the infuriating conversation between
Snape and Cornelius Fudge outside the hospital wing.
A Closet Moment - Hermione sat
down on an upturned bucket, looking desperately anxious...
"Harry, I don't understand what Dumbledore wants us to do."
Rescuing Sirius - Harry and Hermione make
their bold rescue of Sirius. This was more than a little inspired
by the American cover of the book (which, naturally, was the first impression
I ever got of the thing)
Reporting Back - Dumbledore backed
out of the room, closed the door, and took out his wand to magically
lock it. Panicking, Harry and Hermione ran forward. Dumbledore
looked up, and a wide smile appeared under the long silver mustache.
"Well?" he said quietly. Behold Girl Hogarth. Bad me.
And Offstage ... - Harry and Hermione
are innocently receiving their chocolate when...they heard a distant
roar of fury echoing from somewhere above them...
An Unfortunate Halloween
- Harry & Co. have a bit of an identity crisis.
A bad year for Hermione.
With a Bag
- When I finished animation school, I set about redesigning my Potter
characters because, well ... I could draw better. Here's an attempt
The Trio - Another result of the above endeavour.
Cartoony Hermione - I had a bit of fun doing
the Potter stars in a cartoonier style. Don't worry, I'm not switching
More Exploring - Trying to get Hermione right
- A few months into animation school I suddenly realized how much better
I could draw (as a result of intensive life drawing and practising hard
every day) and so drew this to illustrate my glee. It may have been
premature ... she looks like she's punching her nose.
Hermione's Hair - I recieved a number of
requests to draw Hermione at the Yule Ball. I'm pretty bad at costume
design but I knew what I wanted her hair to look like, so this is as
far as I got.
At Honeydukes - Harry appears out of what
had previously been thought to be thin air.
An Uncooperative Bookbag - The travails of
carrying too many books ... not to mention too many courses. And having
friends who just don't get it.
With a Cutting Remark - This was actually
drawn more as an illustration of how I felt at the time than a specific
part of the book, but it fits any part when Hermione is getting down
on Ron after Scabbers dies/disappears.
The Signature - Hermione may be smart, but
her judgement certainly lapsed for a while, in regards to Lockhart.
The Door - In the Shrieking Shack, the door mysteriously
opens by itself, and distracts everyone from the terribly interesting
conversation they'd been having.
in the Woods -
Our Intrepid Heroes meet Malfoy in the woods, at the Quidditch World
Hermione's Expressions - A good way to
explore and refine a character design is to put it through its paces
... Here's a page of expressions for Hermione.
Portrait - My first drawing of Hermione,
fittingly of her first appearance on the Hogwarts Express.
